One terminal is shared by five or six people a night. Two buttons sit in the header and they mean different things.
Log outBack to the PIN screen. Your shift stays open. Your open tabs stay yours. Nothing is sent to the server.Every time you step away from the till. Thirty times a night is normal.
Clock outEnds your work shift for the timesheet. If you still have open tabs, the till asks what to do with them first.Once, when you are going home.
If you tap Clock out by mistake, the sheet that opens says so at the bottom:
Just stepping away? Use Log out.
Tap it and you are back on the floor with nothing changed.
ⓘ Why it matters. Clock out feeds your hours and the tip split. Logging out thirty times a night with Clock out would show thirty shifts and pay tips on none of them properly.
Forgot to clock out? Overnight the sweep closes the shift at your last ring, or eight hours, and a manager confirms the time on Close day. Nothing is lost, but the number is a guess until they do.
